Miami will host the 2024 Copa America final: the premier national team soccer event in South America
The Copa America has been played by the ten countries of this region since 1916 and the most recent champion was Argentina in 2021. The 2024 edition will be held in the United States between June and July, including six countries in Central and North America. When will the Copa America 2024 be played?
The Copa America is played every four years with a different country as the venue. The previous edition was held in 2021, due to the fact that in 2020 it had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Brazil was the host.
The 2024 edition will begin on Thursday, June 20, with the opening match at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta and will run through Sunday, July 14, with the grand finale in Miami.
How will the 2024 Copa America be played?
This event will bring together 16 teams: ten from South America, which are already qualified automatically (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay), and six from Central and North America, which will be chosen according to the classification of the Nations League, a tournament that is part of Concacaf, the soccer confederation of that region. At the moment, as of November 21, the United States and Panama had qualified.
The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each zone will qualify for the knockout stages. In that phase there will be sudden-death matches, i.e. a single match. The winners will advance to the final in Miami.
