The Miami-Dade County Transit and Public Transportation Committee preliminarily approved a plan to set a charge fee for the use of the Metromover, a local transportation system that operates in downtown Miami and the Brickell area free of charge.

Karla Damián, spokeswoman for the Transportation Committee explained to DIARIO LAS AMÉRICAS, that although the proposal had a first analysis, the final approval requires that it be discussed and decided in the Board of County Commissioners.

The move seeks to support revenue from the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation, at a time when the construction boom in Miami’s financial heart is raging.

The local newspaper Miami Today He explains in this regard that according to calculations, the rate per trip would be 50 cents and the projection estimates that in five to 10 years he could recover the initial investment, not including operating costs that rise to $ 475,000 per year that are covered through the collection of taxes.

Last week the Transportation Committee voted 3-2 to impose a fare. The measure needs a two-thirds vote of the Commission to pass.

Some on the committee said they want to keep Metromover free, but at the same time, the County Department of Transportation could use the revenue for sector improvements in other ways.
